Beyond the nearest bus stop: what Kosofe’s residents should know about the new postcode

Giving someone your address should be enough to help them find you. Nigeria’s new digital postcode aims to make that possible, with a code that identifies a particular building rather than a broad neighbourhood.

For residents and businesses across Kosofe, Agboyi-Ketu and Ikosi-Isheri, the potential benefit is straightforward: less time explaining a destination, fewer calls from delivery riders and a clearer way to direct visitors.

The National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, launched by the Nigerian Postal Service, NIPOST, on October 1, assigns an 11-character combination of letters and numbers to addressable buildings and locations. It uses geographical mapping to connect each code to its location.

Unlike the familiar six-digit postcode, which covers a postal area, the new system is designed to distinguish one building from another. A house and its neighbour can therefore have different codes.

That distinction could matter to a trader receiving stock in Ketu, a household awaiting a parcel in Ogudu or a food business delivering to a customer in Oworonshoki. A precise destination could reduce the time spent searching after reaching the right neighbourhood.

The Federal Government also identifies emergency response and public service delivery among the system’s intended uses. These are potential benefits, however, rather than evidence that local responders and delivery operators already use it.

For residents, the first step is to find the correct code.

The official website, postcode.gov.ng, provides access to the system. NIPOST’s guidance explains that users can search for an address or use their phone’s location while at the premises, then select their building on the map. Before saving the result, they should check its position against nearby roads and neighbouring buildings. Selecting the house next door would produce a valid code for the wrong destination.

The postcode should accompany the normal address. Street names, house numbers and community names still provide useful context, while a flat number or entrance description helps a visitor complete the journey. NIPOST says the digital code supplements familiar address information.

The code also stays with the location when an occupant moves. A tenant changing homes would need the postcode for the new building. Where a building has no code, NIPOST says users can request its inclusion through the postcode app.

KIO has not independently verified mapping accuracy across the three council areas. Residents should therefore confirm their building before relying on its code.

For Kosofe, the measure of success will be practical: whether a visitor can reach the right address with less confusion. The new postcode offers a way to do that. Accurate maps and everyday use will determine whether it delivers.
