The refuse piled around Carwash Bus Stop, Iyana Oworo, is being evacuated as the Lagos Waste Management Authority investigates how the road median and drainage channel became an illegal dumpsite.

The operation began on Thursday, October 15, with an excavator and tipper trucks deployed along the Alapere–Third Mainland Bridge corridor in Kosofe. LAWMA Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the equipment was removing accumulated household and commercial waste.

An inspection a day earlier found waste extending beneath the overhead bridge. According to the authority, the deposits included plastic bottles, nylon, packaging materials and food waste. Clearance will cover the affected median, drainage channel and space beneath the bridge.

For the surrounding community, the lasting test will be whether the location stays clear. Removing the refuse addresses the immediate accumulation; preventing fresh dumping will require dependable collection and sustained monitoring.

Gbadegesin said LAWMA was working with enforcement agencies to identify those responsible. The investigation also covers people or groups suspected of facilitating or permitting dumping at the location. Responsibility and any sanctions, the authority said, would be determined by the evidence.

LAWMA said it would collaborate with Kosofe Local Government officials on surveillance and enforcement, while engaging residents, traders and transport operators on proper disposal. Households and businesses were urged to use registered waste collectors.

Residents can report illegal dumping or emerging waste heaps to LAWMA on 07080601020 or 08000052962. The announcement did not give a completion date for the Iyana Oworo clearance.
