A tanker fire beneath Otedola Bridge disrupted the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway towards Berger on Monday, October 19, leaving two men with severe burns and affecting a route used by Kosofe commuters.
Emergency responders rescued the men after the diesel tanker fell and caught fire beneath the bridge. LASTMA said they were taken to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre at Toll Gate for treatment.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency subsequently announced that the blaze had been extinguished and traffic restored. Its update was reported by TVC News at 5:49pm on Monday.
For residents travelling between the wider Kosofe area and Berger, the incident brought disruption to an important connecting corridor. LASTMA reported congestion around the scene while firefighters tackled the flames and emergency teams attended to the injured.
According to LASEMA, the tanker was carrying 33,000 litres of diesel. Paramedics stabilised the two men before their evacuation, while firefighters worked to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading.
Although traffic had resumed by the agency’s update, crews were still completing operations to prevent the fire from reigniting. Recovery of the fallen tanker was to follow.
LASEMA urged motorists to maintain safe speeds and follow traffic officials’ instructions around the affected section. The clearance announcement relates to Monday evening; no fresh observation of Tuesday morning’s traffic is included in this report.
The statements reviewed did not establish the cause of the crash or provide a subsequent update on the injured men’s condition.
