This is the creative base of Oluyemisi "Misy" Akintoye, a professional photographer whose eye for detail has captured countless local memories. But away from the studio lights and backdrops, Misy commands a completely different kind of crowd. She is one of Nigeria’s elite, FIFA-badged female football referees—and she has just been officially appointed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as a match official for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
While the rest of Africa prepares to watch her command the pitch on the continental stage, we at Kosofe Inside Out take pride in knowing that the story of her rise was written entirely on our own local streets, estates, and pitches. Every great journey has a starting block, and Missy began right on Ogunlana Street in Ikosi-Ketu. Long before she ever blew a whistle, she was deeply in love with the beautiful game itself, playing active female football on our local pitches.
Living in Ikosi, she realized that while her playing days might have a ceiling, her football mind did not. It was from this very neighborhood that she made the pivotal, courageous decision to hang up her playing boots and enroll in the grueling referee certification courses under the Lagos State Referees Council. Right here on the streets of Ikosi, a visionary referee was born.
As her refereeing career began to gain momentum, Misy moved to settle in Agiliti Estate, Mile 12. It was during her time living in Agiliti that she underwent her ultimate professional transformation. Navigating the tough, waterlogged terrain of Mile 12 seemed to mirror her tough climb up the ranks of Nigerian football officiating. The grit paid off spectacularly. In 2021, while living out her Agiliti chapter, she earned the highly coveted FIFA Badge, elevating her from our local pitches to an internationally recognized referee authorized to handle global matches.
Today, Misy seamlessly balances two worlds that both require absolute focus: photography and football. A referee must make split-second choices; a photographer must capture a split-second frame.
Her professional photo studio remains active at Obajimi Close, Ketu, standing as a physical anchor to her roots. On any given weekday, she is "Misy the Photographer," adjusting lenses and capturing human expressions for Kosofe residents. By the weekend, she transforms into the disciplined enforcer of FIFA's laws of the game, traveling across stadiums to officiate high-stakes matches.
True to her roots, Yemisi has consistently focused on building the next generation of sports officials in Lagos. During her "FIFA Yemisi Gives Back" initiative—where she organized training workshops for over 100 aspiring young female referees at the Lagos Council office—she emphasized the responsibility that comes with her global platform: "Being a FIFA-badged referee is a privilege. I want to use my status to impact my gender at the local scene and encourage young girls to know that they can go as far as their minds let them."
On her personal philosophy regarding overcoming the challenges of balancing her studio work with intense athletic testing, she said: “Don't limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, you can achieve it... Focus on what you want. Commit to it like it is life and death and don't you dare give up when things get hard."
CAF's recent appointment of Oluyemisi Akintoye for the WAFCON tournament is a major milestone for Nigeria. Before she flies out to represent the country on the continental panel, she added another domestic feather to her cap by taking charge of the high-profile Nigeria Women's Federation Cup final.
