For many people passing through Iyana School Bus Stop, beside the NNPC filling station in Ikosi-Isheri, Kosofe, it is almost impossible not to stop for a few minutes. The reason is simple: a group of determined young children, dressed in boxing gear, throwing punches, skipping ropes and training with remarkable focus inside a makeshift boxing ring.

What may look like an ordinary afternoon training session is gradually becoming a platform for discovering the next generation of boxing champions.

Speaking with Kosofe Inside-Out, the head coach, Mr. Kazeem, said the academy was established with three main goals: to teach children self-defence, prepare them for professional boxing careers and help them stay physically fit.

He explained that parents who wish to enrol their children are required to pay a registration fee of ₦30,000 and a monthly training fee of ₦10,000. In addition, parents are responsible for providing training kits such as jerseys, shorts, boxing gloves, chin guards and other protective equipment.

According to the coach, the training goes beyond exercise.

“Our boxers regularly participate in competitions, and many of them have returned home with medals,” he said proudly.

After the interview, Mr. Kazeem gladly allowed our correspondent to take photographs of the young athletes during their training session.

A similar boxing academy operates at Alhaji Lawal Street, off Demurin Road in Agboyi-Ketu. Known as Good By Force Boxing Club, the academy is owned and managed by Coach Comrade Eleyele.

Coach Eleyele shared the same vision as his counterpart in Ikosi-Isheri, saying the club focuses on self-defence, fitness and developing future boxing professionals. Like the Iyana School academy, his trainees also compete in boxing tournaments and have earned medals for their performances.

From our observation, however, the Good By Force Boxing Club appears to be more structured and better organised in terms of facilities and training arrangements. Nevertheless, both academies are making meaningful contributions to youth development by keeping children engaged in sport, promoting discipline and creating opportunities for talented young boxers to pursue their dreams.

As grassroots sports continue to grow across Kosofe, these boxing clubs are proving that champions can emerge from any neighbourhood when young talent is given the right guidance and support.
